Chinese WeChat, the messenger app owned by Tencent, has banned Blockchain and cryptocurrency related media accounts.
According to WeChat, some public accounts breached of the service’s “Interim Provisions on the Development of Public Information Services for Instant Messaging Tools” terms, that had been introduced by the Cyberspace Administration of China on August 7.
Among the first blocked media were Jinse, Deepchain, Huobi News, Node Capital-backed, and CoinDaily accounts. Instead of the crypto themed articles, the messenger shows the message about the reasons of blocking:
“Due to users’ complaints and after the platform’s examinations, the account is found to violate ‘Temporary Regulations on the Development and Management of Public Information Services for Instant Messaging Tools’ and all contents have been banned. The account has been prohibited for use.”
The exact number of total sites blocked remains unconfirmed. This is not the first time WeChat has blocked crypto themed accounts. In May, the service suspended a third-party application a day after the launch that would have allowed WeChat users to create contract agreements and a unique social media ID using blockchain technology.
