Chinese artist and activist Ai Weiwei together with Irish conceptual artist Kevin Abosch have created two new tokens, freely distributable as an illustration of how value is perceived and permeated in today’s society.
The project, called PRICELESS, consists of twin tokens, one of which is available for publicly such that every person on the planet could own a fraction. The other token is locked away and inaccessible to anyone.
“From the moment we’re born, people try to ascribe value to us — ‘Oh, that boy is so full of potential, or oh, that girl is worthless’ — it’s something society does to us and it’s something we do to ourselves … Our project is just another thing to engage people in the hope that they will spend a little bit more time reflecting on the perversity of how most of us ascribe value to things’ Ai told.
The addresses of wallets holding nominal amounts of the PRCLS token have already been sold. Each wallet address represents different “priceless moments” shared between Ai and Abosch, illustrating how the token can represent value.
As a reminder, earlier this year, Kevin Abosch launched crypto-art project called ‘IAMA Coin’ which combines both physical and virtual art. He has created 100 physical artworks and 10 million virtual artworks. The physical works are stamped using the artist’s own blood.
