The own cult is created around the Silicon Valley. Google, Facebook, PayPal, SpaceX and the rest are titans of the technology world. There are launches, starts, developments, trends. And now another one: reducing the importance of academic education. Studies that the “Comparably” employment platform has conducted showed that even without a completed education, you can receive more than $ 100,000 in the technology sector. Among the positions are developers, IT managers, product managers, and a lot of other management positions.
If there is an opportunity to get a dream job without education and to be honest, these companies embody this image for people of technical interests, then why education is necessary? Let’s look at the reasons for this trend.
In this question, the sociocultural context and the banal human factor are extremely important. There are Elon Musk, Mark Zuckerberg, Steve Jobs, Bill Gates, Jeff Bezos and other cult representatives of these places and the technological word. Who are they? They are dissidents, who are not in line with the framework.
These super nerds personify the exact opposite of the generally accepted. Silicon Valley, where more than 5% of residents are millionaires, who are included in 1% of the richest people in the United States (the rest have only a couple of zeros less), transformed the conception of “rich people.” Perpetual freshmen wearing T-shirts change the course of history. Their lifestyle and ideas are an eternal swim against the current. This is reflected in the perception of the system, in particular, higher education.
University program doesn’t keep pace with technology development
Even in the realities of Stanford, not all programs keep up with the flight of startupper’s fantasy in Silicon Valley. It is worth noting, however, that in the United States it is the universities that have developed infrastructure and all the necessary tools for research. Their contribution to technological progress is difficult to overestimate.
Nevertheless, innovative ideas are such ideas because they create revolutionary new products and form a different culture. Their creators want to surf the space, and not to prove the feasibility of the invention in the university laboratory.
Another problem is that no one can be sure that these skills and knowledge will not lose their relevance in a year. It is expected that students and employers have begun to doubt that academic programs correspond to real market needs.
Low ROI of Higher Education
In the Valley, everyone knows a sense in numbers. Education is viewed through their prism. The rising cost of education in the United States is disproportionate to average wage growth. And, of course, if studying in the long term pays off, then when growth will be as rapid as now, it is likely that studying at a university will not do this.
An existence of alternatives
Sam Lada from IBM notes that boot camps have become a source of incredibly valuable knowledge in technological areas in our time. There are a lot of courses, accelerators, mentoring programs, online courses, after all. Due to the globalization of the online world without borders of the new spheres fundamentally development, the educational services market has seriously expanded. You can learn anything on the Internet or specialized programs. Universities have ceased to be monopolists of knowledge, this could not but reflect on the perception of the need for classical education. Indeed, why do you need to sit for 4 years in the walls of one room, while you can learn what you need on the online course and many times faster?
In addition, as we have said, the need for certain skills and knowledge is changing with lightning speed. Two years ago, only a handful of people heard about the blockchain, and now there are a lot of vacancies with knowledge in this area. Therefore, people are beginning to give preference to more mobile alternatives, rather than university programs, which also drag on for a couple of years.
