Slovakian software supplier Eset has detected that scammers behind Stantinko botnet development are distributing a Monero (XMR) crypto mining module via Youtube.
Having being active since 2012, the botnet is targeting users in Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, and Kazakhstan. The cryptojacking module mines the privacy-focused crypto coin Monero on the CPUs of victims.
The malware has already infected over 500,000 devices. In November, Monero’s core development team confirmed that the software from Monero’s official website might have been compromised to steal cryptocurrency.
