Russia’s lower house of parliament has passed a bill on the mandatory pre-installation of Russian applications on smartphones and other devices sold in the Russian Federation.
New legislation will require all computers, smartphones, smart televisions to have Russian-made software from July 2020. The devices without Russian-made apps will be banned from sale.
The full list of devices are involved and Russian-made software will have to be determined by the government.
State Duma deputies also propose introducing administrative responsibility for the sale of devices without pre-installed Russian software.
Russia’s own Association of Trading Companies and manufacturers of Electrical Household and Computer Equipment decries the legislation. They consider that manufacturers may simply withdraw the Russian market.
The new legislation comes after the Government has introduced enhanced control and limitations on the internet.
