In Canada, cybercriminals are extorting bitcoins from the victims across the country by impersonating local police.
The Royal Canada Mounted Police (RCMP) has seen an increase of the number of scams involving the transfer of money via Bitcoin. Scammers call and advise the victim that they have an arrest warrant because their SIN card was used at multiple Service Canada locations.
Scammers call up the victims several times with the same threat to arrest unless they pay money in bitcoins. The victims describe the scammers as manipulative, aggressive, and convincing.
As previously reported, the delay in the Olympics games has triggered a series of online crypto-related scams, including an email from alleged members of the International Olympic Committee. Scammers asked victims for donations in cryptocurrencies so that “Japanese organizers can recover from the economic impact produced by the postponement of the Olympic games”.
