The tech guru and CEO of MGT Capital Investments John McAfee, who had been indicted for tax evasion in the US, was arrested by Spanish police while boarding a flight from Barcelona to Istanbul. He is currently in custody and his extradition is pending.
According to the indictment, John McAfee had his earnings paid into crypto wallets and bank accounts registered under a false identities.
If McAfee is found guilty, he faces up to five years in prison on each count of tax evasion and a maximum of one year for each count of willful failure to file a tax return.
Over the past years, McAfee’s personal life has attracted as much interest as his professional record. The entrepreneur became the person of media interest following the unsolved 2012 murder of his neighbor in Belize. In 2015, McAfee was arrested for driving under the influence.
